Caring for a Wood Door
Wood doors provide warmth and elegance the entry way of your home. Because new manufacturing processes have reduced the warping and degradation they were once prone to, wood doors have become very popular. If you’ve chosen a wood door for your home, here are a few tips to ensure the maximum lifespan of the door.
Protect it From Rain
To extend the life of your wood door, it should be protected from the rain by the roof or an awning. For maximum effectiveness, the cover should extend out at least half the height of the door and the width should be 1 ½ times that of the door.
Protect it From the Sun
Sun exposure of more than 4 hours per day can quickly deteriorate the look of a wood door. Clear coated doors should have a fresh coat applied every year or two and painted doors should be repainted every 5 to 6 years.
Guard Against Moisture
In addition to rain, wood doors can rot due to flooding and snow buildup. To help guard against this type of damage, ensure that your door clears the porch by at least 4 inches.
Keep the Door Clean
It’s important to keep the door and doorway clean to avoid premature aging of your wood door. Vacuum the door tracks regularly. Use a soft rag to wipe away dust and debris from the door. Use oil soap and a soft rag to clean a varnished wood door. Remember to wipe in the direction of the grain to avoid damage. Use appropriate cleaners for brass and glass surfaces on the door.
